Menswear Monday :: Suiting Guidelines

Screen shot 2014-02-24 at 10.47.21 AM

When it comes to suits, some men are very lost. Let's start with the basic guideline :: Fit is EVERYTHING. It doesn't matter how expensive your suit is, if it doesn't fit correctly it is going to look sloppy. So here are some rules to follow when you're suiting up ::

1) Fit - Your pants should be a "slimfit." This means that they shouldn't have any bulkiness or bunching excess fabric. This only gives the illusion of added weight. The shoulders should be narrow, and the waist nipped.

Screen shot 2014-02-24 at 10.49.37 AM

2) Length - Trousers should be hemmed to reach the top of a standard dress shoe. Your socks should not show, and you should not have bagginess around your ankles. This gives a sloppy, unprofessional look. Your suit jacket should come down to the first knuckle on your thumb. If your jacket is too short, you will look heavier through the middle.

Screen shot 2014-02-24 at 10.50.24 AM

3) No contrast stitching. Visible stitching on a suit is okay, as long as it is subtle and the same tone as the actual suit. Contrast stitching looks cheap!

4) Pinstripes :: If you're going for the pinstripe, choose a subtle and understated stripe. A pinstripe that is visible up close, but barely recognizable from afar is a good choice.

Screen shot 2014-02-24 at 10.43.44 AM

5) Watches :: Never pair a sporty or plastic watch with your suit. Save it for your evening run or weekend activities.

6) Don't over-accessorize. A tie bar, pocket square and lapel pin are not necessary! A rule of thumb -- choose two of the three at most.

Screen shot 2014-02-24 at 10.39.59 AM

7) Camel vs Brown :: If you have the choice between a chocolate brown and a camel / sandy tan suit, go for the tan. It will prove to be more versatile and flow between seasons more effortlessly.

Screen shot 2014-02-24 at 10.34.05 AM

8) Polka Dots :: When wearing polka dots, make sure they are big enough to be recognizable and seen, but not so big that they look goofy and cartoon-like.

So follow these guidelines the next time you're suiting up or shopping for a new suit. You can be sure you're doing it right!

The Swing Dress

swing dress

As the temperatures here in Atlanta reach the 60's and spring is approaching {wishful thinking!}, I wanted to discuss a spring staple in my closet. Enter, the swing dress. I love this classic and casual dress that is versatile enough to dress up or down. I like to call it the "daytime dress." So many of us have the little black dress and others that we pull out for cocktail parties, dinners out and more. But what about a daytime dress? I'm thinking the swing dress fits the bill this spring. It has a girly, classic shape and can be accessorized in almost any way. Here are a few examples, many from one of my favorite online shopping sites - asos.com {if you haven't been to this site, they always have great deals and totally unique pieces!}::

1) ASOS Swing Dress in Knit - pair with a bright patterned scarf, like the Stella & Dot Wild Hearts

Screen shot 2014-02-19 at 8.19.43 AM Screen shot 2014-02-19 at 8.27.53 AM

2) Carmina Halter Swing Dress - I love this pretty shade of pink. Take it from day to night with a white blazer, and belt to draw in the shape a bit

3) Anthropologie Savant Swing Dress - I love this for a casual day of errands, lunch, or whatever your day might bring you. Simple black and white stripes make this an effortless look. Just pair it with a long necklace like this Makena Pendant Necklace. Pairing a blousy dress or top with a long necklace as opposed to a short one will draw the eye up and down, creating a slimming effect.

4) ASOS Swing Dress in Paisley - This pattern is so much fun. Dress it up or down with booties or heels. It doesn't need much in terms of accessorizing, just a simple long necklace like my favorite Rebel Pendant, and you're good to go!

5) ASOS Vero Moda Swing Dress - This casual fabric is perfect for almost any activity, and the dark color allows it to be taken from casual to dressy in no time. Pair with a leopard belt, and dress it up with a black pump at night.

So will you be adding a swing dress to your closet? I'll be posting some real outfit photos of swing dress ideas on Instagram and Facebook, so be sure to follow along!

As for now, I'm headed to sunny Florida so I won't be blogging for a few days! But you can keep up-to-date on my beach-chic outfits through social media, as always.

Wishing you a happy & stylish week!

Friday Feature :: Styled Shoot

Issue12_BrittBass

Happy Valentine's Day to all my fellow style lovers! I love this day because it means showing my love for style by wearing pretty shades of pink, looking at lovely flowers, eating inordinate amounts of chocolate, and showing the love to family and friends!

Friday's Feature highlights someone I love dearly. Britt Bass Turner is a long-time friend and incredibly talented painter in Atlanta. A few months ago, LIFE.styled. had the pleasure of styling Britt for her featured shoot in Anthology Magazine. Britt's paintings may be bright, colorful and bold, but her style stays a little more classic and neutral. We worked together to find looks that complimented her paintings while still staying true to her personal style.

For Britt's first outfit, we chose a navy striped peplum top from Anthropologie. This really complimented the navy and bright pink tones in her paintings behind. Since her paintings are so bold, a simple stripe was all we really needed in terms of patterns & colors in her outfit. We paired that with one of her favorite go-to necklaces, a cream braided tiered necklace, and a bold red lip against her fair complexion and dark hair.

The back of the shirt featured a cream crochet pattern, a fun little detail shown here ::

For her second outfit we decided to lighten things up. A neutral chevron dress with a cream sheer overlay achieved that. Cinched around the waist for figure-flattery and also paired with a bold lip, this lighter look really made the colors in her paintings pop behind her. It also tied in nicely to her two bottom paintings which featured more neutrals, as well as the white walls in her studio.

But seriously, how gorgeous are Britt and her paintings? You can check her out at brittbass.com

You can be sure we will be doing more stylized shoots featuring Britt and her art in the upcoming future!

Wishing you a happy & stylish Valentine's Day with the one(s) you LOVE!

Menswear Monday

Happy Monday to you! Today's Menswear Monday features my new favorite casual pant for men. I've always been a fan of camel; whether it's pants, shoes or accessories. This color is so versatile, and can be paired with virtually anything; both black & brown, navy, and any color under the sun. When I saw this garment-dyed denim at J.Crew, it was love at first sight! Of course I persuaded my hubby to buy a pair and he has grown to love them as well.

I also love the fit of this jean. Women - if you shop for your husband or significant other at JCrew, make sure you have them try on the "770" fit in denim. This is a slimfit pant that is really flattering on many different body types. Most men wear their pants too large, and they end up looking baggy and saggy after a few wears. Don't be afraid to go slimmer! It creates a more figure-flattering, slick and put-together look. Trust me, you are doing your man yourself a favor!

Here are a few top pairings with these pants ::

We hope you enjoyed Menswear Monday. {Yes, this will be a regular Monday thing!} We're always open to your suggestions and comments, so please leave your feedback below.

the look :: for less

lookforless1

It's a happy Thursday because ::

a) it's almost the weekend, and

b) we're kicking off "The Look for Less"!

I constantly see fashion trends and outfits that I am drooling over, but simply could never justify or afford. One of my favorite coveted brands is Alice + Olivia. With beautiful, unique & trendy dresses starting at hundreds of dollars, it's a brand that's not exactly in most of our (my) price range. Today I'm featuring two of my favorite winter trends :: Leather + open-front cardigans.

Enter, Alice + Olivia "Scottie Shearling," currently ON SALE {enter jaw drop} for $837, marked down from $1395.

This is a super chic and stylish open front cardigan with leather. Perfect for cold weather, day-to-night, and dressier occasions. I love everything about this look, except the price!

Screen shot 2014-01-23 at 12.51.47 PM

Now, enter the Anthropologie "Ecliptic Cardigan," giving you the same effect at around 1/8 of the price {$98}. Music to your wallet's ears! When shopping with one of my clients a few weeks ago we actually purchased this open-front cardigan from Anthro. So I can tell you first-hand that yes, it is just as dreamy as it looks on the website.

1 outfit, 2 ways :: outfit #3

Happy Monday, style lovers! Today's #1outfit2ways involves a classic cable-knit sweater paired with Anthropologie patterned corduroys.You can do a lot with a classic white sweater; from dressing it up with statement jewelry {like my all-time favorite, the Stella & Dot pegasus}, pairing it with various scarves or patterns, to wearing a casual collared shirt underneath as shown here.

We took this JCrew lightweight plaid boyfriend shirt with tones that complimented the corduroys and paired it underneath the sweater {A TIP :: When doing this, always roll your sleeves up -- with the underneath shirt showing and rolling over the sweater or cardigan you're pairing with. This makes the look feel more feminine, and less bulky or boxy}

Here is our #1outfit2ways, outfit #3 ::
